The Short Bus

This week, I came across this postcard from Postsecret.com, "an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard". This postcard reminded me of the book Riding the Short Bus by Jonathan Mooney and the subsequent documentary. In this clip, Jonathan interacts with many individuals with different disabilities and discusses his own experience as a child and an adult with a learning disability.

As an educator, this makes me think about the message we send our students who are receiving special education services and what future is possible for them. Watch for the end of the clip where Mooney discusses genetic screening with the sister of Katy, who has an intellectual disability. What does genetic screening mean for the civil rights of individuals with disabilities and for society's awareness of and acceptance of such individuals?
